Health and Food Security for People Experiencing Homelessness

Project FoodChain mobilizes community networks to break down barriers to health and food security for people experiencing homelessness.

The Network Effect

At Project FoodChain, we believe in the multiplier effect of networks. Our programs bring together and mobilize diverse communities and players, creating collaborative impact far greater than could be achieved by our organization alone. Currently, our network includes 60 front-line agencies, 17 storage and delivery partners and corporate and community supporters from across Canada.

Did you Know?

  • 75% of Toronto’s unhoused residents are Black, Indigenous or other people of colour (BIPOC).

  • An estimated 50,000 Toronto residents experience hidden homelessness on any given night.

  • 80% of drop-in centres surveyed report extraordinary, pandemic-level demand for food and supplies.

  • 98% of shelter beds are full, forcing people to sleep outside.

Impact

Since our inception in April 2020, Project FoodChain’s F.A.S.T. Food [Food. that is Accessible. Shelf-Stable. and Transportable.] and S.O.S. [Sustainable. Outdoor. Supplies.] initiatives have secured and delivered millions of essential food and supply items to 60 agency partners who redistribute to thousands of unhoused guests. Essential nutrition, water and supplies include:

  • 1,400,000 PPE Items

  • 1 million granola bars and trail mix packs

  • 750,000 bottles of water

  • 375,000 sachets of coffee and hot chocolate

  • 25,000 personal hygiene kits

  • 92,000 pairs of socks and underwear

  • 37,000 nutritional drinks and shakes

  • 11,000 boots, gloves and shoes

  • And so much more…
